Del's daze
Saw Del this morning about 7:30 a.m. He apologized for not recognizing me on Thursday morning. Anyway, Friday morning, he was chipper again. I was late for work and he asked if I worked on Sundays.
No, I said, it's Friday.
"Friday!" he said. "It's Friday?! Really?"
"Yeah," I said. "All day."
"I thought it was Sunday!"
"Well, see ya," I said. I left him shaking his head. Guess the free way doesn't really change from day to day.
I rode by in the evening and Del was still there, sound sleep on his cardboard, his bike a little too far away, I thought. Anyone could have stolen it.
Here he is. I didn't stop and bother him today. I didn't want to wake him.
A couple miles down the bike path, an unmarked police car was barrelling down the path, heading east. No insignia on the doors and when they passed me, I couldn't make out the insignia on their uniforms either. I don't know why, but my first thought was, "Uh oh! They're after Del!"
