Update on my somewhat faulty memory

The crash I described below where a woman I rode with in training for the American LUNG (not cancer) Association was deliberately hit by a motorist happened April 24, 1994.

Her name was Margaret Madamba, then 32, and she was injured as I described and had to undergo multiple surgeries. The guy who hit her was Shawn Eugene Bates, then 22. He was part of some Oildale auto theft ring. In fact the black Toyota Land Cruiser he was driving that day was stolen.

He tried to hit several other cyclists who jumped out of the way before he got Margaret. Witnesses said he was laughing as he tried to hit people.

He pleaded no contest to attempted murder and hit and run and was sentenced to 25 years with the proviso that he serve no fewer than 20 years, rather than half time or time off for good behavior.

I wonder where Margaret is now? I wonder where Bates is? And when he's getting out.
