Dodging a bullet

This is a tale from a friend of mine. Anyone who knows me, KNOWS this wouldn't happen to me. I'd be in the slammer in a matter of minutes. Cops hate me...

Maybe his goodcarma will rub off on me? NAAAAAAHHHH

........

Get this tale of goodcarma, sort of.

So I have been flaking on getting my car smogged. I just can't get around to it, so my registration is long overdue. Well one Sunday night I am driving back from Fresno, about 20 minutes south of town. I am cruising along at 80 mph and listening to a book on tape on my MP3 player, with headphones.

In my peripheral vision I see a car passing me on the right and when I glance over I see it is a CHP cruiser. Then, to my horror, the cop hits his brakes. He slows and holds a position behind my car. This is never a good sign. I know he is checking me out. And I know he is gonna realize my registration is overdue.

So I started pulling over to the side of the road. Before he even lit me up. Eventually he hits the lights and tells me over his loudspeaker to take the next offramp. I follow his instructions, pull around a corner and shut the car down, waiting for him to come write me a ticket. The cop car pulls behind me, sits for a minute and then -- he drives off. Without a word. I sat there not knowing what the heck to do.

Was the guy called away for an emergency? Would he be writing me a ticket and mailing it to me? Was this all just a joke? Was he trying to trick me into driving off and then bust me for something more serious?

Anyway, I sat there for a few minutes and then continued on my way home, ticket free.
